India Ports Summit, Mumbai, 11 September 2015
There are several initiatives being taken by Indian Government in development of Indian ports business. Government of India is looking to develop the inland waterways sector as an alternative method of transport for getting goods to the nation’s ports to attract private investment into the sector. The national maritime agenda 2010-2020 is an initiative of the ministry of shipping to outline the framework for the development of the port sector. In this context, Maharashtra Maritime Board together with Elets Technomedia Pvt. Ltd. is pleased to announce first “India Ports Summit” to be held on 11 September, 2015 at Mumbai. This event will focus on the various aspects of port- led development and development of industries in and around port areas. PORT-LED DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR INFRASTRUCTURE & INDUSTRIAL GROWTH
Port-led development is the clarion call given by the government with at least 12 smart cities and several coastal economic zones in the pipeline under the ambitious Sagarmala project. Initiated with a prime objective of promoting port-led direct and indirect development and to provide infrastructure to transport goods to and from ports quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively, the Sagarmala project will change the shape of Indian coastlines. Developmental projects are already underway with an allocation of Rs 4,000 crore having been made for SEZ at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, which is one of 12 major ports in India, under the Sagarmala project. Also, coastal economic zone is in the offing at Kandla port which has two lakh acres of land in its possession. The initiative will address challenges by focusing on supporting and enabling Port- led development through appropriate policy and institutional intervention; port infrastructure enhancement including modernisation and setting up of new ports; and efficient evacuation to and from hinterland. Elets India Ports Summit will provide this knowledge sharing platform sharing and take the Government initiative forward.
